Depression is a mood-related disorder that causes a lasting feeling of sadness and loss of interest. A lot of people are not aware of how dangerous this disease is and normally stay unaware until it hits close to home. In the present day, depression can be diagnosed and is professionally called Clinical Depression or Major Depression Disorder.

The effects of depression can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. This disorder can become so bad that doing some day to day activities becomes a big struggle and sometimes you may feel like life is not worth it. Believe it or not, up to 11% of Canadians between the ages of 15–24 suffer from depression.

Depression can be triggered by any sad or unnerving event that may have happened to you or around you. The death of someone you know, a break up or simply losing an argument. Your trigger can be more or less easy depending on how bad your depression is.

The symptoms of depression are:

  • Ongoing feeling of sadness.
  • Tearfulness (You will feel the need to cry even without a reason).
  • Hopelessness
  • Short temper
  • Feeling as if you’re worthless
  • Irritation
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of interest/Lack of pleasure
  • Sleep disorders
  • Tiredness
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss

Ways to control depression are:

There are minimal options when it comes to controlling your depression. Unfortunately, most people that suffer from depression have heard the phrases “ shake it off”, or “ you just need a nap”, worse, “ it will pass”. These phrases DO NOT help in any way, for some survivors, it actually makes it worse. Here are some ways to control your condition:

Causes :

Diagnosis involves physical and mental health assessment. Blood tests may be performed to rule out any other medical conditions such as hypothyroidism.

Few things you may need to know:

You can fight against depression using one of few methods and it will improve your mental health depending on how deep in depression you are. A few of these are:

MEDICATIONS

Medications can be prescribed by a psychotherapist and psychiatrist depending on their consultation. Psychotherapists rely mainly on psychological methods rather than medical means to treat mental disorders. Whereas psychiatrists focus on the branch of medicine that would be concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

If you cannot afford the classes that can range from $25 CAD per class or purchasing a membership for $25 CAD, you can consider the free video on youtube.

THERAPY

Therapy comes in several different forms. However, for these situations, only a few types can assist your depression.

Psychotherapy -This is the practice where a mental health professional assists you by encouraging you to speak about you and talking about the condition and related issues.

Brain stimulation therapy — This is a non-invasive procedure where a professional would use a magnetic field in order to stimulate the nerves cell in your brain. This will improve the symptoms of depression. This is normally used once other methods have failed.

SELF — CARE ( TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF).

NUTRITION

There are no foods proven to treat MDD. However there are some foods and drink that may increase the level of your depression, these are:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • High-calorie and low nutrient foods

It is advised that to have some type of control over your depression, you will need to avoid these foods.
